Another example of why topping is never a good idea. A row of 12 Douglas Firs had been topped about 15 years ago. They started rotting and breaking where they were topped, so had to be removed.

This Douglas Fir in Vernon, BC had to be removed due to previous topping. The tree had grown new unstable leaders which were causing a hazard to the neighbour’s property.
